NEW YORK CITY, NY — The Trump administration is preparing a deportation flight to forcibly remove newly arrived Afghans to Pakistan, with the goal of eventually returning them to Afghanistan, according to reliable reports we have received. This flight could take off as soon as November 2nd or 3rd.
“After nearly two years of Trump’s mass deportations that have destroyed immigrant communities across the country, the Trump administration now wants to send Afghans to a country that has violently expelled millions of Afghans back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan,” says Arash Azizzada, co-director for Afghans For A Better Tomorrow. “This would do irreparable harm.”
This week, AFBT coordinated an effort to stop the deportation of Ali*, an Afghan immigrant and New Yorker who fled the Taliban’s cruel rule. He’s currently languishing in detention and told he will be deported to Pakistan as early as next week. Afghanistan remains a dangerous country, under a “do not travel” advisory from the U.S. State Department. Women and girls are barred from education past the sixth grade and the Taliban rules the country by force.
The Trump administration is hoping Americans will be distracted by an election in order to carry out yet another betrayal of Afghans who deserve protection, and to continue to execute his bigoted anti-immigration agenda. Congress must urgently pass the Afghanistan TPS Act in order to protect newly arrived Afghans in the U.S.
